Ex-Thunder guard Russell Westbrook launches tech program for at-risk youth

As much as Russell Westbrook’s job was to put on a good show for the fans and help the Thunder contend for a title when he was in Oklahoma City, the superstar guard always made sure to give back to the fans and the entire community.

He may be gone — now a member of the Houston Rockets — but Westbrook continues to help others in need. Westbrook is now starting something out of Los Angeles called the Westbrook/Brownstein Green Tech Program, which is focused on helping at-risk, inner-city youth get off the streets and into the classroom.

With the initiative, Westbrook wants to impact “the kids’ futures, impacts their mind[s], the mentality of where they grew up, where they’re from,” as he explained to PEOPLE.

I didn’t look for anybody to help or hand out but I definitely thought it was important that people that had the ‘power,’ the ability to be able to help, did that. It was motivation for me to be able to get to a level, to a point, where I can give back to some of the same kids that are in the same situation that I was in.’

Westbrook also added:

I just want to be able to impact and inspire as many people as possible. I can relate to them because I was one of them, and it’s important that they know that and understand that I am here to help give them the resources for them to be able to be successful in this world.

Some of the things students will learn about are coding, computer literacy and computer engineering. According to TMZ Sports, the students will also learn how to work with drones.
