Barrhead Travel has announced plans to open a 100 new stores and re-hire many staff after the holiday giant's collapse.

The firm slid into compulsory liquidation last month after failing to secure a £200 million rescue plan following crucial talks with the major shareholder and creditors.

Around 150,000 customers were left stranded abroad at the time, with some holidaymakers being turfed out of their hotels.

But Glasgow-based Barrhead Travel have now pledged to bring on recruits "as quickly as possible" as part of an expansion proposal having already hired a number of .

Chairman of Travel Leaders Group - who acquired the firm in 2018 - Mike Batt said: "Since our acquisition of Barrhead Travel, we have been exploring ambitious expansion plans for this trusted brand.

"The situation with Thomas Cook has accelerated those plans.

"We believe there is strong demand for the services provided by Barrhead Travel so we are moving full steam ahead with our growth strategy.

"We want to welcome many of the Thomas Cook staff to the Barrhead Travel family and quickly get them back to business.”

At present, Barrhead Travel operates a network of 76 stores across Scotland, Newcastle, Cumbria, Leicester, Southampton and Belfast.

Jacqueline Dobson, President of Barrhead Travel, said: "With the backing of Travel Leaders Group, we are looking forward to opening more Barrhead stores and helping our colleagues across the industry get back to serving their loyal clients.

"The high street travel agency is very much alive in the UK and is pivotal in today’s holiday booking journey. Customer experience and employee development remain our number one priority and this philosophy will be prominent across all of our new stores.”

We previously told how up to 2,500 jobs are potentially being saved after Thomas Cook’s British travel agent shops are to be bought by Hays Travel.

The company will acquire all 555 stores and look to re-employ former employees from Thomas Cook's retail operations.
