Ex-Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers has just passed his Arsenal audition as Leicester City school Jose Mourinho's Tottenham

Brendan Rodgers is being hotly tipped to replace Mikel Arteta in the Arsenal dugout - and he's just ingratiated himself to the Gunners faithful in the perfect way.

The former Swansea City boss is currently second favourite with bookmakers to succeed Spaniard Arteta should the Emirates hierarchy decide to make a change. Arsenal, at present, are in freefall, making their worst start to a league campaign since 1974. As such, Arteta is under huge pressure, with doubts hanging perilously over his tenure.

Italian Massimiliano Allegri is the man bookies think will be next Arsenal boss should Arteta be axed, but Rodgers is right in behind him.

And Leicester City's impressive win over Tottenham on Sunday will have done his reputation among Arsenal fans the world of good.

The Foxes set up with the perfect gameplan against Jose Mourinho's men, hitting Spurs on the counter. And the win was a perfect audition for Rodgers, with the Foxes winning 2-0.

The 47-year-old was famed for flowing, front-foot football at Swansea and he has developed that philosophy at every club he has been at since he left SA1 in the summer of 2012.

Arsenal fans hailed Rodgers as a "tactical genius" for toppling Mourinho, and urged the board to "give a king's ransom" to Leicester for his services.

Goals in either half from Jamie Vardy (penalty) and a Toby Alderweireld own goal after the break gave Leicester all three points in north London.

Rodgers schooled his former mentor Mourinho, whom he knows from his Chelsea coaching days, playing Spurs at their own game. The win moves Leicester above Tottenham in the Premier League table.

Arsenal, way down the standings in 15th place, have always retained an interest in Rodgers, harking back to his Swansea days. The Northern Irishman has fans within the Gunners' boardroom, who had identified him as a possible replacement for legendary manager Arsene Wenger.

Rodgers was a list of candidates to follow the Frenchman, but Gunners chief Ivan Gazidis opted for Spaniard Unai Emery.

That ended in disaster, with Arteta taking over just over a year ago at the Emirates. And if things don't improve drastically in the red half of north London, Rodgers could be the man they call on.
