Ex-Sunderland midfielder Darron Gibson heads new consortium who are favourites to buy Wigan Athletic

Former Sunderland midfielder Darron Gibson is fronting a consortium set to take over at League One strugglers Wigan Athletic, according to reports.

According to The Athletic, the former Manchester United and Black Cats midfielder is fronting the group that has emerged as the fresh favourites to buy the Latics.

Wigan have been in administration since the start of July 2020 and suffered a significant blow when a proposed deal with a bidder from Spain fell through last month

The joint administrators behind the club, Gerald Krasner and Paul Stanley of Begbies Traynor, confirmed that 38 groups or individuals had approached them with intent to buy the club, last week.

As of last Thursday evening, 14 of those remained interested after initial discussions and four had provided proof of funds.

The Athletic report claims that Gibson's group is one of those to have shown proof of funding and is set to meet with the EFL this week.

The group in question is reported to include a management team with a 'strong track record' in British football and a foreign investor is backing them.

The report said: "Gibson’s group, which might be joined by two other footballers, is understood to have the funds to purchase the club in a bank account and a loan lined to fund the club going forward."

Gibson played for the Latics 18 after leaving Wearside in controversial fashion back in 2018.

The 33-year-old is currently playing for League Two side Salford City.
