Ex-Sunderland favourite Lee Cattermole uncertain on his future as the Eredivisie ends early

Lee Cattermole admits he is uncertain about his next move in football after the Eredivisie season in the Netherlands was brought to a premature end.

The former Sunderland stalwart joined Dutch top tier side VVV-Venlo last summer after bringing to an end a ten-year stay at the Stadium of Light.

After signing a one year deal with Venlo, Cattermole quickly became a fan-favourite there just as he was on Wearside also. He made 13 appearances before the season was brought to an early conclusion due to the coronavirus crisis.

And with his contract up this summer, he admits he faces an uncertain future.

Asked where his future lies, he told TalkSport: "I really don’t know.

“I signed a one-year contract which came about very late with me leaving Sunderland in July.

"I initially wanted it to be just a one-year thing but I think the next two or three months are going to be a bit crazy for everyone.

"I’ve got to keep fit and positive and hopefully an opportunity comes up which I want to do, whether that’s here [UK] or there.”

While Cattermole has enjoyed his European adventure, he admits the nature of its climax is disappointing, with some big games missed out on as a result of the season's ending.

“I’m really disappointed, we had some big games coming up,” he said.

“We were due to go to PSV and then to Ajax the second last game of the season, which could have been a great experience if they went on to win the league. I’m gutted to be fair, but you’ve got to keep yourself fit and see what’s next.

“I think that the TV money is not as big for the [club’s] revenue over here. Not having fans in the stadium, the clubs lose a lot of money that way so they've voted to end the season.

“There’s so much unknown at the moment.”
