Ex-Sunderland duo set to leave VVV Venlo

Former Sunderland duo Lee Cattermole and Jerome Sinclair are set to leave Dutch club VVV Venlo.

Cattermole joined the Eredivisie outfit on a one-year deal last summer after leaving Wearside following a decade with the Black Cats.

The 32-year-old made 11 appearances for Venlo before the Dutch season - along with most football across Europe - was suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Dutch season has subsequently been ended and declared null and void.

Players and staff at Venlo have agreed to take a temporary wage cut to help ease the financial impact of the crisis on the club.

But Venlo's technical director Stan Valckx has confirmed that Cattermole will be leaving the club when his contract expires at the end of the season, citing financial and sporting reasons.

Cattermole spoke to Talksport last month and, when asked whether his time in the Eredivisie was over, he admitted: "I really don't know.

"I signed a one-year contract which came about very late with me leaving Sunderland in July.

"I initially wanted it to be a one-year thing but I think the next two or three months are going to be a bit crazy for everyone.

"I've got to keep fit and positive and hopefully an opportunity comes up which I want to do, whether that's here [in the UK] or there."

Watford forward Sinclair joined Venlo on a season-long loan last summer but has returned to England and is not expected back, with no prospect of seeing that loan converted into a permanent deal.

Sinclair, who spent the first half of last season on loan with Sunderland, made 23 appearances for Venlo without scoring.
