Ex-Sunderland boss reportedly linked with the Southampton job as pressure grows on Ralph Hassenhutl

Former Sunderland manager Chris Coleman is reportedly one of the frontrunners to replace Ralph Hassenhutl at Southampton.

The pressure on Hassenhutl intensified on Friday as his Southampton side were thrashed 9-0 at home to Leicester - the biggest home defeat in Premier League history.

To make things worse, the Saints now face reigning Premier League champions Manchester City twice in the space of a few days, meaning there is a very real prospect that the former Red Bull Leipzig boss' misery could be compounded.

The Mirror reports that the Austrian will be given time to turn things around but should he be sacked then former Sunderland boss Coleman will be one of the leading candidates to replace him.

The 49-year-old has been out of work since May after leaving Hebei China Fortune and will be keen to rebuild his career in Britain after a bruising spell in charge of Sunderland.

Coleman replaced Simon Grayson as Black Cats boss in November 2017 but he could not prevent Sunderland from being relegated to League One.

The Welshman, who guided his country to the semi-finals of EURO 2016, was largely popular among supporters but was sacked as manager once Stewart Donald bought the club from Ellis Short.
