Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas has identified why Harry Winks has had to wait for his opportunity under Jose Mourinho, ahead of the Boxing Day clash with Brighton.
The 23-year-old was named in the starting line-up against Brighton for the first time since the defeat to Manchester United earlier this month, with his last appearance being a late cameo against Wolves 11 days ago.
While Spurs fans believe he is the future of their midfield, as well as England's, Jenas believes that Winks' issues have come due to Mourinho's desire for consistency.
As he explained, Winks has regularly picked up injury issues and that has prevented him from become a staple in the heart of the midfield under Mourinho.
"The reason why he maybe hasn’t played is that he picks up quite a few injuries every now and again, so he’ll miss one or two games," he told Amazon Prime Video.
"I think Jose wants consistency in the middle of the park with two players he can go to on a regular basis.
"There’s no doubt that Winks will bring that control element to the game, which they haven't had.
"Harry will slow that game now, will start finding those little passes through the defence and that's a job that he wants."
Winks is named in the Spurs line-up vs Brighton ahead of club record signing Tanguy Ndombele.
Football.london understands that the Frenchman is not carrying an injury and has simply been left out of the matchday squad as per the decision of Mourinho.
