Ex-Spurs defender names the player who will start alongside Tanguy Ndombele next season

Mauricio Pochettino has a selection headache in midfield next season following the big-money arrival of Tanguy Ndombele.

The Spurs boss got his man at the beginning of last week in a £63million deal from Lyon after his stunning performances for the Ligue 1 side over the past two years.

Mousa Dembele's exit and a number of injuries left the Lilywhites rather short in midfield last campaign as Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks both nailed down a starting spot.

With Ndombele expected to go straight into the side after his club record move, it remains to be seen who will partner him in the Spurs team.

According to former Spurs right-back Pascal Chimbonda, Sissoko will win the battle to start alongside the French international in midfield.

"Sissoko will start alongside Ndombele next season," he told Sportingbet. "He was outstanding for Tottenham last season and finally got to show Tottenham why they signed him.

"His energy levels and strength make him a real nuisance to play against and adding Ndombele to that will only make it worse for other teams."

Winks has really impressed since bursting onto the scene at Spurs but Chimbonda feels that he will actually be better utilised in the closing stages of games by Pochettino.

"Winks is an excellent player to bring off the bench, but he’s not first choice," he added. "He buzzes around the pitch and seems to be everywhere when you’re watching him.

"When there’s 20 or 30 minutes to go, he’s the ideal man to bring on as the opposition won’t be able to match his energy levels.

"He’s very good at dictating the game and controlling the tempo.

"With the options Tottenham now have in the deeper lying roles, I would be surprised to see Winks start regularly for Tottenham."
