Ex-Spurs defender Kieran Trippier has message for Premier League sides on how to stop Liverpool

They may not have lost many games this season, but Premier League leaders Liverpool have come unstuck in recent weeks.

And former Tottenham defender Kieran Trippier has pinpointed what he thinks is key to stopping Jurgen Klopp's men.

The Reds have exited the FA Cup and Champions League so far this month, following on from a first defeat in the Premier League this season at the hands of Watford less than two weeks ago.

Their latest defeat came at the hands of Atletico Madrid at Anfield, with the La Liga side coming back from two goals down in extra time to win 3-2 on the night, and 4-2 on aggregate in the last 16 tie.

Trippier was part of the Atletico side, and he explained the Spanish side's plan to try and stop the Reds, and how they approached trying to hold on to their first leg advantage.

“Liverpool are a fantastic side, but we knew we had to stay defensively strong and keep our shape, and try and frustrate Liverpool as much as we can," the former Spurs defender said, speaking to BT Sport.

“We knew we would get chances if we could break the press of [Roberto] Firmino, [Sadio] Mane and [Mo] Salah.

“We kept on believing and kept going and going, and we got the win.

“We knew before we came here that Liverpool are very strong here at home, I have come here many times in the Premier League.

“But we knew we had to stay in our shape and frustrate them as much as we can, and we knew we would get our chances, it was just about being clinical and we sure were."

Atletico Madrid join RB Leipzig, Atalanta and Paris Saint-Germain as the four sides through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League so far.
