Ex-Spurs ace defends Mauricio Pochettino by making Man United and Real Madrid comparison

Former Tottenham midfielder Gus Poyet believes there is nothing unusual about Spurs' start to the season.

Mauricio Pochettino's side have suffered an indifferent start to the campaign, with two wins, two draws and two defeats from their opening six Premier League games.

Spurs were also held against Olympiacos in their opening Champions League game, despite leading 2-0 at one point in Greece, and were then dumped out of the Carabao Cup on penalties by Colchester on Tuesday night.

The defeat to the League Two minnows has sparked some what of a backlash, with Pochettino coming in for criticism, but Poyet believes the reaction is too extreme from inside the game.

"I think it's normal," the Uruguayan told talkSPORT on Friday morning.

"They got to the Champions League final last year and were close to the biggest trophy.

"Everybody was looking at Tottenham during the summer expecting those big players to come because of the previous two transfer windows not signing any players, and as a consequence the team didn’t start very well.

"But it's happening everywhere.

"I like to watch football not only in England, but in Spain and France too, and Paris Saint-Germain are not great – in the league they’ve lost two games already!

"The same is happening for Real Madrid and Barcelona, and of course at Manchester United.

"When you’re winning nobody pays attention but as soon as you don’t, or you have a result like against Colchester, the difficult questions start for coaches in the press conferences."
