Ex-Speaker John Bercow is nominated for a peerage - by Labour

Labour has nominated former Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow for a peerage.

He has been selected alongside former Labour Party deputy leader Tom Watson and Jeremy Corbyn ’s former chief of staff Karie Murphy of the Scottish Labour Party.

She led the party’s disastrous general election campaign.

All three appear on Corbyn’s eight-strong Dissolution Honours list, it was reported last night.

Bercow was the first Speaker in 230 years not to enter the Lords upon resigning.

He was snubbed in the New Years honours after finally stepping down last November.

It was thought Prime Minister Boris Johnson had planned to exact revenge on Mr Bercow for his ‘bias’ over Brexit by denying him a seat in the Lords.

Bercow’s successor Sir Lindsay Hoyle has backed calls for Bercow to be given a peerage.

The controversial former speaker garnered international fame for his cries of “order!” - and his ability to find himself at the centre of constitutional crises.
