Ex-soldier who battered paedo in prison unmasked as child abuser who preyed on young girls

An ex-soldier who battered a paedophile while behind bars for rape has now been unmasked as a child abuser who preyed on two young sisters.

Robert Ballantyne, 38, was brought to justice a week ago after carrying out sordid assaults on the two girls more than 16 years ago.

The former squaddie, from Dumbarton, was hiding his vile secret when he and he and fellow rapist Raymond Dempster attacked pervert James Taylor in Peterhead prison in 2004.

The Record revealed at the time how the “detested” baby rapist was subjected to a vicious beating by the pair.

Ballantyne was convicted last Wednesday of sexually abusing the girls, aged just six and nine, between January 2002 and February 2003.

The dad, who has since married and moved to Portsmouth with his wife and two children, was found guilty after a two-day trial at Dumbarton Sheriff Court.

A jury returned a majority verdict on two charges relating to the victims – who are now both in their 20s – and Ballantyne will be sentenced next month.

After the jury returned the guilty verdicts, it was revealed his previous convictions included one from the High Court in 2004, when he was jailed for six years for raping a woman at her home.

At the time of the conviction, the victim bravely told our sister paper the Sunday Mirror of the two-hour ordeal.

Ballantyne, who had been hailed an Army hero after he helped clear landmines in Kosovo, took a sickening series of pictures during the attack, which were found by CID officers her home.
