Ex-SNP councillor apologises for branding Ruth Davidson 'fatty' on Twitter

A former SNP councillor has apologised after fat-shaming Ruth Davidson in an exchange on social media.

In a response to a tweet shared yesterday by the ex-Scots Tory leader, Jim Torrance snapped: "What's your point fatty?"

Davidson had earlier posted a single emjoi in reply to a Nicola Sturgeon tweet from May 3.

It's thought Davidson was drawing attention to the First Minister's claim that she was about to spend the afternoon reading briefing papers - and was not commenting on the SNP leader's exercise regime.

Yesterday, the Scottish Government claimed that Sturgeon had received no written briefings from her chief advisers on coronavirus during the first months of the global pandemic.

Sturgeon insisted that she had received “lots of briefings and lots of advice” in other ways than writing after being questioned on why written briefings could not be released under Freedom of Information laws.

Torrance - who represented Cardonald before standing down ahead of the last council elections - initially tried to brush off his comment.

In a statement, he said: "I tried to highlight what I thought was hypocrisy in one person making light of another person's efforts for physical and mental fitness.

"I thought that was unbecoming of Ruth. My sarcasm & playfulness fell as flat as a single emoji answer. A learning experience for us both I hope."

Following a backlash, he added: "For the avoidance of any doubt, I am sorry for the ill-judged tweet, and for any unintended offence taken."
