Ex-Senate president ambassador to Canada

Former president of the federal Senate Scott Ryan is Australia's next High Commissioner to Canada. (AAP)

Former Senate president Scott Ryan has been named as Australia's next High Commissioner to Canada.

Mr Ryan brought forward his parliamentary retirement in September, announcing he would not be returning for the final sitting blocks of the year.

Foreign Minster Marise Payne announced Mr Ryan's new appointment on Monday while unveiling Australia's latest representatives to the United Nations, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Timor-Leste.

Senior Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade career officer William Costello will be the next ambassador to Timor-Leste.

Another DFAT career officer, Amanda Gorely, is Australia's next ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva.

The government is also sending Fiona Hoggart and Sarah Hooper to be consular-generals in the Indonesian city of Surabaya and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, respectively.
