Ex-Seahawk Malik McDowell insists he was cleared to play by independent neurologist

Former Seattle Seahawk Malik McDowell took to Twitter on Saturday in the wake of a report on the team’s lawsuit alleging he has yet to pay back his signing bonus.

Last week, the Detroit News reported that the Seahawks have sued McDowell in federal court to recoup the nearly $800,000 he was ordered to repay in February by an arbitrator. McDowell’s signing bonus was about $1.6 million, but the Seahawks never paid him half of it.

The Seahawks selected McDowell in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft, but he never saw the field. Injured in an ATV accident prior to the start of training camp, McDowell spent his short career on the non-football injury list. He was finally released by Seattle at the end of last season.

The Seahawks doctors never medically cleared McDowell, which he addressed in a series of tweets, arguing he was given the go-ahead by an independent neurologist.

McDowell also asserted his injuries were not the primary reason he was kept off the field.

The Seahawks have yet to publicly comment on the lawsuit, McDowell’s injuries or respond to his tweets.
