Ex-Salford City and Oldham Athletic boss Richie Wellens appointed manager of League One club

Former Salford City boss Richie Wellens has been appointed as the new manager of Doncaster Rovers.

The 41-year-old takes over the reigns at the Keepmoat Stadium when he was a player between 2007 and 2009, before a second spell between 2013 and 2016.

It is his first job since being sacked at League Two Salford in March, where he left the Peninsula Stadium fewer than five months after he was appointed by the Ammies.

The former Manchester United trainee was appointed as Ammies boss in early November after leaving League One side Swindon Town.

He replaced Graham Alexander at the Peninsula Stadium, who was sacked in October.

Wellens led the Ammies to their first piece of silverware as an EFL club with a victory on penalties at Wembley over Portsmouth in the 2020 Papa John's Trophy Final.

He will now be in charge at the Yorkshire side, who finished 14th in League One.

Doncaster chief executive Gavin Baldwin said: “Having gone through a lengthy process and interviewed potential candidates, the board came to a unanimous decision that Richie was the right man to lead the club forward.

“He knows what this club is about and speaking to him it is clear to see his drive and determination to be successful as our manager.

“I’m sure our fans will join me in welcoming Richie back to Doncaster Rovers for a third spell, and give him their full support.”
