'Ex said he'd never forgive me after I kissed his pal, should I risk fury to date him?'

Dear Coleen, I split up with my ex a couple of months ago and it had been coming a while.

We have a four-year-old son together, so I have to keep things on friendly terms for his sake.

Since the break-up, I’ve become close to one of his best friends, who lives nearby and has been very supportive.

The other night we had a “moment” and he kissed me.

He said he’s always liked me and fancied me, and wished I wasn’t with his mate.

To cut a long story short, word got back to my ex about this friendship and he called to say he’d never forgive me if I got together with his friend.

I don’t know what to do – I really like this guy and don’t see why I shouldn’t give things a go with him.

I don’t feel I owe my ex anything. What do you think?

Coleen says

I think a couple of months after your break-up is probably too soon to be jumping into a serious relationship with anyone, let alone one of your ex’s closest friends.

The danger is that you could jeopardise the relationship with your ex for good over something that might not go anywhere.

I think it’s easy to get drawn into a rebound fling when a relationship ends badly because you want to feel desired and you’re desperate for someone to pay you the attention you didn’t get from your ex.

So I would put the brakes on this new relationship until you’ve been on your own for longer and also had a proper chance to work out things with your ex and get to a better place.

You may not owe him anything, but you both owe it to your son to make this break-up as stress-free as possible.
