Ex-retail worker shares golden rule to make fake Christmas trees look 'bigger and fuller'

It's officially December and that means it's time to break out the Christmas decorations and get the tree up.

Artificial trees are a great option to save cash and avoid leaving a trail of pine needles to get lodged in your slippers throughout advent - and they can easily be packed away for next year.

But you've got to be careful when selecting a fake tree, as some shoppers who thought they found a bargain have been left very disappointed by the sad-looking results.

There's nothing worse than a sparse tree, but thankfully a former retail worker has shared the secrets she learned to ensure the trees look worthy of going on display.

The method aims to get rid of all the gaps between the branches (Getty Images/iStockphoto)

In a video shared on TikTok, racking up more than 750,000 views, she said after pulling down the main branches, you should work towards the outside separating the smaller branches in a two to the side, and one up pattern, as seen in the video above.

She says: "One thing I learned working in retail, put your Christmas tree branches two out, one up, two out, one up.

"It'll make your tree look bigger and fuller."

She explained she was always instructed to use the technique when preparing Christmas trees for window displays in shops and viewers loved the simple trick, as one person replied to say: "You're making me want to redo my tree. Never knew this, thank you."

A second wrote: "Ooooh, you know the ways. I'm gonna fix mine - it looks ridiculous."

Another replied: "Wish I had seen this before putting up my tree tonight."

And others vouched for the method, as one said: "I thought everyone already did this?"

Someone else added: "Who didn't know this... literally been doing it all my childhood."
