Ex Rangers WAG Jean Johansson brands Scottish Football Association 'weak' for stance on racism

Ex Rangers WAG Jean Johansson has branded the Scottish Football Association 'weak' for their stance on racism.

A Place in the Sun presenter Jean, who is married to Finnish coach and ex Rangers man Jonatan Johansson, said the SFA's approach to racism was 'Disappointing, wrong and weak' after they told fans they would continue to take a stand against racism prior to kick-off for all of UEFA #EURO2020 matches.

They explained in a statement: "Scotland Men’s National Team will continue to take a stand against racism prior to kick-off for all UEFA EURO 2020 matches.

The squad, coaching staff and backroom members will stand up to racism ahead of the Group D matches against Czech Republic, England and Croatia.

Andy Robertson, Scotland Men’s National Team captain explained: 'It is important we continue to tackle the issue of racism and raise awareness of the need to change people’s mindsets but also their behaviours."

"Prior to our World Cup qualifiers in March we spoke as a group and felt that taking a stand was the best way for us to show solidarity and also to reinforce the need for meaningful change in society."

By taking a stand it means the team won't be 'taking the knee' which is to go down on one knee as a protest against the unfair treatment of black people, especially by sports players on a field before a game.

Taking the knee began in 2016, when some American athletes protested against police brutality and racism by kneeling on one knee during the U.S. national anthem.

Jean was not the only one to be upset at the news.

Stuart Braithwaite from Belle and Sebastian said: "I'm extremely disappointed in the @ScotlandNT ‘s decision to stand instead of kneeling against racism.

Especially in light of their English counterparts refusing to buckle to racists.

"I don’t doubt their intentions are good but it really is a dreadful example. Please reconsider."

SNP councillor for Glasgow Cathcart James Dornan said: So to show how opposed we are to racism we intend to just stand there as normal whilst others make a noticeable gesture against racism? Brave shout @ScotlandNT that’ll show them."

Fans also complained: "When the England team take the knee and the Scotland team don't, how do you think this is going to look?"

Another added: "Taking a knee is literally an internationally recognised symbol against racism, and doing it at games has been led by black sportspeople. This is letting fans down. Rethink, take the knee."

Bt someone else said: "It was very rarely done in the Rugby 6N’s this year. Only a select few from across all teams done it. Why bring politics etc into a game? Racism happens to everyone, some more than others which is WRONG."
