Ex-Rangers striker Duncan Ferguson 'set for shock return to management'

Former Rangers and Dundee United striker Duncan Ferguson is set to be named Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager, according to reports.

It's claimed the Highlands club have reached an agreement to appoint the former Scotland international as their new manager.

Inverness have been on a recruitment drive for a new boss after Billy Dodds was sacked following a dire start to the league campaign.

And now Sky Sports claim Ferguson has been identified as the man to turn things round in the Highlands.

It's reported Ferguson will be unveiled as Inverness manager in a press call at 9.30am on Tuesday.

The former Everton forward is a free agent after being sacked by Forest Green Rovers after less than six months in charge of the English club.

He previously led Everton in two interim spells at Goodison Park.

Darren O'Dea had been tipped as a frontrunner for the Inverness post but decided against a move to the Highlands.

It's understood an approach had been made for talks with the Celtic B team coach however, the former Ireland international opted to stay at Celtic.

A source close to O'Dea revealed he had been flattered by the approach but decided a move wasn't right at this stage.

And Inverness appear to have quickly moved onto other targets with Ferguson now reportedly in line to be unveiled as Dodds' successor at Inverness.

A statement on Dodds' sacking read: "It is with much regret that the club has taken the decision to terminate the contracts of Head Coach Billy Dodds and his Assistant Manager Barry Wilson with immediate effect.

"In the first instance we would like to put on record our huge appreciation for the efforts of Billy since taking the position. His professionalism, attention to detail and positive attitude could never be faulted no matter the challenges we faced."
