Ex-Rangers star Neil McCann defends Hamilton boss Brian Rice after 'embarrassing' result

Rangers favourite and BBC pundit Neil McCann has strongly defended Hamilton boss Brian Rice over questions over his job.

On BBC Sportsound today the former Dundee boss fumed that the New Douglas Park gaffer had been question about his future at the club this week.

Accies had slumped to a 3-1 defeat to Annan earlier this week in the Betfred Cup leading to a scathing fan reaction online, with the side bouncing back today with a win over Ayr.

However, McCann wasn't best pleased about "the question Brian would have had to have fielded" when asked about his views by host Richard Gordon.

He told BBC Sportsound : "I felt it was quite disprectful. It's generally quite poor towards any professional manager.

"You throw into the mix how early we are in the season, then you throw into the mix a guy like Brian Rice who stands up there every week regardless of results and is brave and continually telling his players to be brave.

"They're always underdogs, they're nearly always everyone's favourites to be relegated but they play with a freedom, regardless of the pressure he is feeling as a manager of Hamilton who are always flirting with relegation.

"He gets a lot of strength and support from the board. I made the point in the game against Hibs that Hamilton were awful. Awful.

"And yet he didn't just roll over and surrender. He continued to let the boys play, a few young boys in the team, he went for it and could have taken an absolute skelping but he went for it and got himself back in the game.

"He said himself he's unhappy with the performance and the result and as a manager, I've suffered one of those games myself with an embarrassing result."

Rice hit back at the social media storm after victory over the Somerset Park side, urging critics "not to hide behind keyboards."
