Ex-Rangers star Joey Barton pleads not guilty to 'tunnel attack' on rival football manager

Former Rangers player Joey Barton has plead not guilty to an on ex-Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel .

The 36-year-old had been charged with causing actual bodily harm during his Fleetwood Town team's 4-2 League One defeat to Stendel's side earlier this year.

Police were called to the tunnel area of Oakwell Stadium on April 13 following the conclusion of the game.

Prosecutors say Stendel suffered damage to a tooth, according to The Mirror .

Barton denies he had any involvement in the incident and will appear at Sheffield Crown Court on November 6.

Following the incident, Stendel was left with facial injuries and required emergency dental surgery.

Barnsley lodged formal complaints with the English Football Leagueand the Football Association over the alleged incident.

TV footage showed police trying to stop Barton from leaving Oakwell Stadium shortly after the alleged clash is said to have taken place.

Barton has only once previously spoken about the alleged clash with Stendel, taking to Twitter three days following the match.

"With regards to the alleged incident on Saturday following our game against Barnsley, I emphatically deny all the allegations made," he tweeted.

"Given this matter has not been formally closed, it would be inappropriate for me to make any further comment."

Barton has been in charge of Fleetwood since the summer of 2018 and oversaw an inconsistent campaign last season.

However, he has now guided them to third in the current League One standings.

Barnsley were promoted under Stendel last year but he lost his job earlier this week after a poor run of results in the Championship.

The Tykes find themselves 23rd in the table with just one win from their 11 league games this season.
