Ex-Rangers owner Craig Whyte to lift the lid on 'greed and corruption' at Ibrox in explosive new book

Craig Whyte is releasing an explosive new book which is claimed to lift the lid on his controversial reign at Rangers .

The former owner, who steered the club into administration and then liquidation in 2012, has penned an autobiography called Into the Bear Pit.

According to its publisher, the book is full of “startling revelations” and is “the previously untold story of greed, corruption and scandal at the heart of Rangers FC told, definitively, by the man who was at the very centre of the storm”.

The book is being released on Valentines Day next year - the eighth anniversary of the club entering administration .

Whyte, 48, bought the Ibrox side for a £1 from David Murray in 2011 – a move initially lauded by the club’s fans.

But self-destruction followed as Rangers went into administration over a £9million unpaid tax bill.

The club struggled to find a buyer amid the looming Big Tax Case fight with HMRC over and Employee Benefit Trust scheme – which was later lost in court – and saw them spiral into liquidation.

Whyte was later charged with fraud in connection with his Rangers takeover but was acquitted by a jury following a seven-week trial at the High Court in Glasgow in 2017.

According to the book’s publisher Birlinn, Whyte “was put on trial where he faced the full might and resources of the government for his role in the downfall of the club.

“Although he was ultimately acquitted of all charges, he had to endure years of false accusations from some media outlets and multiple death threats from obsessed fans.”

Their description of the book adds: “When Whyte walked through the gates at Ibrox, the club was mired in debt and plagued with a toxic culture which seeped everywhere – from the corridors of power to a sectarian hard core in the stands.

"The ‘great Whyte hope’ was touted for a time as Rangers’ saviour but he was soon hung out to dry as the fall guy for Rangers’ misery as the unthinkable happened.”
