Ex-Rangers defender details why he wants old club to lose

Former Rangers player Kevin Mbabu has revealed why he wants Servette to prevail in their Champions League qualifier.

Michael Beale's side host the Swiss outfit at Ibrox tonight in the first leg of the third-round tie. The return leg will take place in Switzerland next week.

Mbabu, who now plays for Fulham, turned out for Rangers in 2015. The defender was one of the 'Newcastle Five' who joined the club when Mike Ashley was involved.

And despite playing for Rangers, he admits he wants them to lose their bid to qualify for the Champions League group stages.

The 28-year-old came through the youth ranks at Servette and was back there on loan last season. So, it's the Swiss outfit that he holds closer to his heart.

Asked about the atmosphere at Ibrox, he told TDG Sports: "It's very impressive. The fans in Glasgow are very, very hot. It starts from the warm-up, it continues during the match of course.

"There is this idea of intimidating the opponent, of whistling him, of provoking him too. Everything is applauded, a tackle, a corner, a muscular intervention. Servette will discover a cauldron and in this cauldron, they will have to keep a cool head.

“You have to show the respondent, enter the duels as the Scots will do, with a lot of intensity. You have to dare to step on their toes, if I may say so. Containing the commitment of Rangers will dampen the enthusiasm of the supporters. Ibrox is borderline deafening."

He added: "The block should probably not be too low, so as not to suffer immediately, so as not to give confidence to the Rangers.

"Can Servette get away with it? They not the favorite against Genk and, even at ten, managed to eliminate the Belgians, so why not? There is a Bedia on fire, a Timo Cognat shining in the middle, a Derek Kutesa who can make a difference. Watch out for Tavernier, he's a very strong, very offensive right-back.

“I hope Servette will eliminate Rangers, no matter how!”

Meanwhile, boss Michael Beale has named his starting XI to take on Servette tonight.

He has made three changes to the line-up which lost to Kilmarnock at the weekend.
