Referee reviews Moussa Sissoko 'handball' call, Mohamed Salah penalty decision and VAR's role

Former Premier League referee Peter Walton has backed the decision to award Liverpool a penalty after the ball hit Tottenham Hotspur's Moussa Sissoko in the armpit.

Speaking as an expert pundit on BT Sport, the retired official supported the view taken by Damir Skomina and the video assisted referee team charged with overseeing the Champions League final in Madrid.

Mohamed Salah stepped up to take the penalty to score in the second minute of the first half after a ball cannoned off Sissoko to leave the referee pointing to the spot.

"When it happened straight away we called it a penalty in the production truck," said Walton on BT Sport.

"Sissoko's arm is so pronounced it's unbelievable. Yes, it may hit his chest, but his arm has come down to the ball as well.

"No option whatsoever but to award a penalty kick. We talk about the law being changed for next year - at the moment it hasn’t been changed - but even under the current law handling offense there as we’ve seen consistently in the Champions League this season has been awarded."

Spurs fans were less than impressed with the decision with some half-jokingly calling for a reboot of the fixture.
