Ex-Premier League referee gives verdict on VAR controversy in West Ham's defeat to Man City

Chris Foy has had his say on the controversial VAR decisions that marred West Ham United's clash with Manchester City.

The Hammers lost the game 5-0 but it could have been worse if it wasn't for the interference of the Premier League's newest addition.

Unsurprisingly, opinion has already been divided after an action-packed weekend that saw VAR rule out two goals, order the retake of a penalty and check over 70 incidents across the weekend.

While the aim is to improve the decisions made on the field, the debate has not been wiped away and former Premier League referees Chris Hoy was appeared on Sky Sports News to discuss the decisions at The London Stadium.

Gabriel Jesus had a goal disallowed after Raheem Sterling played the striker in, only for the goal to be ruled out with Sterling adjudged to be marginally offside.

Speaking of the decision, Hoy said: "All goals are checked as a matter of routine. In this case it is a factual decision - in the build-up to the goal you can clearly see Sterling is offside so it is a straightforward decision to overturn the goal."

The next controversial decision was when Sergio Aguero was ordered to retake his penalty after Declan Rice was inside the area when the penalty was struck.

Foy said: "What we're looking for with encroachment is what we call 'direct impact'. Because it was Rice who encroached and Rice who cleared the ball, the decision was a retake."
