Ex-premier Greiner lands US diplomatic job

Former NSW Liberal premier Nick Greiner is Australia's next consul-general in New York. (AAP)

Former NSW Liberal premier Nick Greiner has been appointed as Australia's next consul-general in New York.

Foreign Minister Marise Payne said Mr Greiner - who has most recently been federal president of the Liberal Party - had extensive and diverse experience.

"He has previously held senior roles in the private and public sectors, including as chairman of a number of leading Australian companies and as the premier of NSW and leader of the opposition," Senator Payne said in a statement on Thursday.

The consul-general's main role is to engage with business leaders in New York and America's northeastern states to promote Australia as a trade and investment partner.
