Ex-police officer admits careless driving caused death of council worker on The Strand

An ex-Merseyside Police officer has admitted causing the death of a council worker through careless driving.

Andrew McKenna, who was a serving officer at the time of the incident, today pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving at Liverpool Crown Court.

McKenna, of Seddon Road, Garston, spoke only to confirm his name and plea in a packed court room full of his victim, Linda Meagor's, friends and family.

Wearing a Berghaus coat over a suit, the 57-year-old looked forward as arrangements for his sentencing were discussed.

Calling the case "tragic", David James, defending, said his client would be sentenced on February 4.

Judge Thomas Teague QC remanded McKenna on unconditional bail until then.

Ms Meagor, 49,  died after she was struck with a black Ford Mondeo car when crossing The Strand.

She has been described by her family as "an inspiration" and a "lovely person full of warmth and laughter".

A previous hearing heard two off-duty doctors who were travelling in a passing Uber raced to Ms Meagor's aid and tried to save her on February 15, 2018.

The two doctors rushed to get a defibrillator but she was pronounced dead at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, having suffered head injuries.

McKenna was a serving police officer for Merseyside Police, but has since left the force after Ms Meagor's death.

He had previously pleaded not guilty to driving "without due care and attention" in March last year, but entered a different plea today.

Ms Meagor was a popular figure in the Liverpool arts community and had worked on major projects including the return of the Giants, the Three Queens on the Mersey and the Remembrance Day poppies outside St George's Hall.

At the time of her death, her family released a heartbreaking tribute.

The family said: "Linda Meagor was an inspiration; an amazing, talented and lovely person full of warmth and laughter; a unique lovely soul who will be much missed by all who knew her, especially Chris, her partner of 26 years and all of her family.

"Having come to Liverpool to study drama at John Moores University, Linda decided to stay and contributed so much to the arts, culture and health sectors in Liverpool."

During her time in the city, Ms Meagor worked for Unity Theatre, Brouhaha, Altrudrama, Culture Liverpool, the Bluecoat, Squash Nutrition, Urgent Care, Curious Minds, Beat Life, Hope Street Limited and Arts Council England amongst others.

Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson also paid tribute, saying: "Her love for Liverpool meant she thrived in her job.

"She was passionate about making sure everyone in this city felt part of our events programme, so much so, we recently asked her to spearhead the education element of our Liverpool 2018 programme."

The Mayor added how “popular, hardworking and a valued member” Linda was, not only in the council but across the wider arts community.

He said: "Her sense of humour and can-do attitude shone through everything she did. Her colleagues in Culture Liverpool are devastated by the news and will miss her deeply.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with her partner Chris, her family and her friends at this tragic time."
