Former Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone, who left a significant mark on both domestic and foreign policies with his strong leadership, died at 101, it was learned Friday.
While serving as prime minister for five years from 1982, Nakasone accomplished administrative and fiscal reforms including the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways, and strengthened the Japan-U.S. relationship based on mutual trust between the leaders, creating an era of "Nakasone Politics."
Nakasone was born in May 1918 in Takasaki. After graduating from the University of Tokyo, he joined the then home ministry in 1941. He ran in the House of Representatives election in April 1947 in the former Gunma No. 3 Constituency and was elected for the first time at the age of 28.
