Ex-Nottingham Forest striker Britt Assombalonga scores first international goal - and his dad's reaction was brilliant

Britt Assombalonga's father broke down in tears last night after seeing his son score his first international goal.

The former Nottingham Forest striker came off the bench to score the fourth in DR Congo's 4-0 win over Tendayi Darikwa's Zimbabwe.

However, his nation will have to wait to see if their three points are enough to progress to the knockout stages, after finishing third in the group.

But that did not dampen the occasion for the 26-year-old, or his father.

“This moment is up there with the best, especially after hearing stories of past players playing and scoring goals for Congo, and me doing it as well is an amazing feeling," he told Goal.com.

“It was unbelievable and I know he’s a proud dad at the moment.

“I heard he was in tears after I scored that goal and I’m just happy for my whole family because I know everyone was cheering me and the whole team on."

Defeats to Uganda and hosts Egypt left DR Congo with an uphill battle going into their clash with Zimbabwe, knowing that a even a victory would not be enough to guarantee a place in the second round.

“There are regrets, but at the end of the day we can’t live on the regrets and just have to focus on what we’ve done now and hope we can go through and carry on this momentum.

“We have done what we could’ve done today and we just have to hope and wait. It’s going to be a long couple of days but we just have to rest up and be ready if we do go through.”

Meanwhile, the 4-0 defeat for Zimbabwe means that Forest defender Darikwa's first international tournament is over, allowing the right-back to regroup with the Reds and meet up with new boss Sabri Lamouchi for the first time.
