Former Nottingham Forest striker Britt Assombalonga could be playing Champions League football next seasson amid claims he is wanted by Scottish giants Rangers.
According to Give Me Sport, the Middlesbrough forward has darted onto the radar of ex-Liverpool hero Steven Gerrard who is in charge at Ibrox.
Rangers are celebrating lifting the Scottish Premier League as they ruined Celtic's hopes of making it 10 in a row and they are eager to assert their authority again next season.
And according to reports, Assombalonga is a forward they would love to sign although would face fierce competition with the striker set to be a free agent.
Boro boss Neil Warnock appears to be preparing to lose him on a free transfer in the summer with the 28-year-old having struggled for goals this season with his last coming against Forest in January.
He had been given the armband at the Riverside, but has been stripped of the captaincy and it looks increasingly likely that he will leave Boro who paid Forest £15m for his services.
He has scored 47 goals since making in 159 appearances for Warnock's men and is likely to attract a string of admirers despite his reported £38,000-a-week wages.
Boro boss Warnock admitted there was no rift with the forward who has a fine reputation as a goalscorer.
I haven’t got a problem (with him),” Warnock told the Northern Echo last week.
“Obviously, I’m not daft and he’s not daft, and I think these next two or three games will decide what we’re going to do and we’ll act accordingly after that.
“I’ve spoken to Britt quite a lot. Before Christmas he was my captain, so I obviously spoke to him most days. I know what his feelings are, and he knows what mine are.
"There’s 11 games to go, and at the moment we haven’t looked further than next week really.”
Assombalonga was a huge favourite at the City Ground where he smashed in 30 goals in 47 games and was regarded as one of the best strikers to have played for the club in recent times.
Boro had signed Assombalonga for £15m after triggering a release clause in his deal with the majority of Forest fans sad to see the former Peterborough forward quit the City Ground.
