Ex-Nottingham Forest star admits surprise at Reds and hails key trio

Former Nottingham Forest midfielder Jonathan Greening has weighed in on the progress the Reds have made under manager Sabri Lamouchi.

The Frenchman replaced Martin O’Neill in the City Ground dugout last summer, and has made an impressive start to life on Trentside.

Prior to the suspension of professional football in England due to the coronavirus outbreak last week, Lamouchi guided Forest to fifth place in the Sky Bet Championship table.

Promotion to the Premier League remains the ambition for Forest and Lamouchi, although it remains to be seen if and when the current campaign will be completed.

Greening, who made 55 appearances for Forest from 2011-2014, admits he’s surprised to see where the Reds are in the league table, and has praised a number of the club’s key players.

“At the start of the season, you probably wouldn’t have put Forest in the top six, or even eight,” Greening told 888sport. “But I’ve watched them a few times this year and Lamouchi is doing a tremendous job.

"The players have a good team spirit and they’ve played really well when I’ve seen them live.

"Forest have got some really good attacking players and defensively they look solid.

“They’ve got Joe Worrall in there and he was coming through when I coached the under 21s. He’s done really well.

“They’ve also got some good experience with (Ben) Watson in midfield. He’s been there and played important games.

"Attacking-wise they’ve got some creative players and (Lewis) Grabban can always nick you a goal. So if they can get through a two-legged semi then in the final they can beat anyone on their day.”
