Ex-Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Luke Steele seals surprise move after scoring a hat-trick

Former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Luke Steele has secured a surprise move to non-league Stamford Town.

The ex-Manchester United stopper has joined Northern Premier League Division One South East having been without a club since his departure from the City Ground in the summer.

Steele was a popular figure among some Reds fans for being a reliable goalkeeper when called upon, but was told he had no future at Forest in the summer after spending last season on loan Millwall.

Despite being a goalkeeper, Steele has been keeping himself fit by playing for his local Sunday League side as a striker and scored a hat-trick for Peterborough Northern Star Reserves at the weekend.

In a recent podcast with Undr the Cosh, the 36-year-old said: "I’ve played the last six games.

"The manager was really good with me but I told him that I didn’t want to play in goal and he’s given me the number nine shirt, which is so big for me.”

"They asked me and I said yes and I’m absolutely addicted. I’m playing up front, just behind the striker. First game I played, we won 4-1 and I didn’t score, so that was me addicted.

“The second game, we win 4-1 again, I scored and I’ve scored every game since then and I got five on Sunday. I’ve got nine in six, I’m top goalscorer and we’ve just gone top of the league!”

But despite his goalscoring heroics, he is likely to be goalkeeper for Stamford.
