Ex-Nottingham Forest chief Aitor Karanka opts against applying for Championship job

Former Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka is no longer in the running for the vacant job at Huddersfield Town, it has been reported.

Karanka was said to be keen on replacing Jan Siewert at the John Smith’s Stadium according to Sky Sports as he looks to get back into management after leaving his City Ground post at the beginning of the year.

Speaking earlier in the summer, Karanka told Spanish media of his desire to seek out a new “project” and that he would be "open to moving anywhere".

Despite showing an early interest , the Spaniard has seemingly opted against applying for the position, say the Huddersfield Examiner, with the Terriers moving onto other targets.

One of those candidates won’t be Chris Hughton who, like Karanka, decided moving to the club wasn't on his agenda.

The favourite remains German Hannes Wolf, a former boss of Hamburg.

Chairman Phil Hodgkinson was said to have begun the interview process on Sunday, as he seeks a new manager to lift the Terriers following a poor start to their first season back in the Championship after relegation from the Premier League.

Town are mired in the relegation zone and sit second bottom with just one point from their opening five games, and were beaten 2-0 at home by Reading on Saturday – their fourth straight defeat in league and cup.

Their only point so far came in the second game of the season away at Mark Warburton’s QPR, which followed home defeat to Derby County and were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Lincoln City.

The Examiner say Huddersfield hope to make a fresh appointment after Saturday’s visit to Luton Town in the Championship.
