Ex Newcastle United youth 'touched' by Beith benefit match after suffering horror leg break

Beith Juniors have agreed to play a fundraising friendly for a footballer who suffered a horror leg break in midweek.

The North Ayrshire outfit will  take on Glasgow Perthshire at Keppoch Park this Saturday at 1pm with all proceeds from the gate going to injured Shire star Steven Logan.

The 24-year-old midfielder, a product of Newcastle United's youth system, suffered a broken tibia in a league match against Bellshill on Wednesday night. He is still in hospital having had an operation to insert a pin in his leg and is expected to be out of action for at least three months.

A friendly between Beith and The Shire had been pre-planned due to both sides being without a competitive fixture this weekend.

It was originally scheduled to take part at Beith's ground Bellsdale Park and after hearing about Steven's injury, the Mighty offered to make entry to the game donation-only with all proceeds going to Steven.

However, due to poor weather forecast for the weekend, the game has now been switched to Glasgow Perthshire's ground with the same arrangement in place. Beith have also agreed to make a separate donation of their own.

A spokesman for Glasgow Perthshire said "Steven has only recently joined us after a prolonged spell out with an ACL injury to his left leg and has worked tirelessly shedding two stone and reaching levels he set himself, so this is another huge setback for a genuinely loveable Cumbrian lad.

"He's up on crutches just now and should hopefully be home over the weekend."

"He has been extremely touched by the support following Wednesday's injury. Beith's gesture is just another marvellous example of the junior footballing community coming together."

A spokesman for Beith said: "We're delighted to help Steven in any way we can. When we heard about his injury it was the very least we could do."

Glasgow Perthshire have also set up a GoFund me page in aid of Steven at http://bit.ly/31uUz0d
