Ex-Newcastle United defender reveals Sunderland job interview as Hamza Choudhury link re-emerges

Here is your 4am Newcastle United digest.

Ex-Newcastle United defender Sol Campbell reveals Sunderland job interview

Ex-Newcastle defender Sol Campbell has revealed that Sunderland offered him an interview for a managerial role, prior to Kyril Louis-Dreyfus' takeover.

The former Premier League winner has been out of the game since leaving his role as Southend United manager at the end of the 2019-20 season.

Campbell has spoken at length about the lack of opportunities within the game for BAME managers and revealed that from nine applications, the Black Cats were the only ones to offer him an interview.

Speaking to TalkSPORT, Campbell said: "I've applied for nine clubs and had one interview. That was with Sunderland.

"They're a big club, even though I played for Newcastle, maybe that went against me - who knows?"

Leicester's transfer may give Newcastle a run at another target even if plane nightmare hurt

Boubakary Soumare could be on his way to Leicester City after the Frenchman previously turned down Newcastle United - and the move raises questions about the long-term future of Magpies' target Hamza Choudhury.

Soumare is believed to be close to completing a £20m switch to the King Power Stadium and the midfielder's arrival would see Choudhury slip further down the pecking order.

Newcastle were interested in signing Choudhury on loan back in January, but Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers ultimately decided against letting the 23-year-old go after the Foxes were unable to bring in a replacement.

It will be interesting to see whether Newcastle reignite their interest this summer but, regardless, the black-and-whites already know a lot about Soumare after the Ligue 1 title winner rejected a move to St James' Park last year in order to keep his options open.

One former Newcastle star in and one out in the Bournemouth dugout?

The Sun report that ex-Newcastle United defender Jonathan Woodgate looks set to be axed as manager of Bournemouth.

And the same report claims that they will try to replace him with another former Magpies star in Fulham boss Scott Parker.

The Cherries reportedly plan to part ways with Woodgate after he failed to deliver promotion via the Championship play-offs and Parker is their top target as uncertainty continues to shroud his future at Craven Cottage.
