Ex-Newcastle striker Joselu's remarkable La Liga resurrection continues as Valencia eye summer move

Former Newcastle United striker Joselu left St James' Park back in 2019 after just a three-goal haul for the Magpies in his final season on Tyneside.

But since then he has proved to be a revelation in La Liga, hitting double figures in all three of his seasons back in Spain so far with 33 goals to his name in 86 league starts.

With 11 in the bag already he could even add to that tally before the end of the campaign with Alaves but things could get even better for the 31-year-old.

Joselu was perhaps underrated during Rafa Benitez's stint as boss at Newcastle with the target man scoring just seven goals in two years after a £5million move from Stoke City.

Back then Benitez found himself defending the striker as United tried to establish themselves again in the Premier League.

However, he's not looked back since returning to Spain and with his contract about to expire on June 30 he has a number of La Liga rivals considering a free transfer option for him - including Valencia.

Joselu was linked with Sevilla last season but with his current club second bottom and heading into the Segunda Division, he is unlikely to be joining him as the next chapter of his career awaits elsewhere in La Liga.

Joselu divided opinion during his time at St James' Park but no Geordie fan will begrudge him the success story he has written back in his homeland.

In the years ahead he may be looked at as one of the players that helped stave off relegation during the final years of Mike Ashley, with the striker notably scoring in Amanda Staveley's first game in attendance at the start of the takeover process against Liverpool during a 1-1 draw back in 2017.
