Ex-Newcastle kid with 'bags of potential' signs for Hamilton

Hamilton have signed former Newcastle kid Regan Thomson, following his release by the English giants.

Newcastle beat Celtic and Rangers to Thomson in 2020, signing him on a two-and-a-half year deal from Queen's Park, but the move hasn't worked out for the 19-year-old midfielder.

Thomson started his career at Queen's Park and made the breakthrough to their first-team in 2019, but was then snapped up by Newcastle, where he made his way through their under-18s and under-23s, but didn't make the step up.

Thomson has international experience with Scotland under-17s.

Boss John Rankin said: "We've had a young Scottish boy on trial, he's got a good pedigree and we're looking forward to him joining us.

"He's got really good ability, he's hungry, he's young, and he has made a really good impression when he's been in. Hopefully we can give him the platform to go and play and express himself.

"He left Queen's Park to go down to Newcastle a few years ago. I know his pedigree, I've known him for a while, he's a name that stuck out for me years ago.

"Thommo has been unfortunate that he has gone down there and found it tough, and he's come back up the road, is hungry, has the bit between his teeth and wants to build a career for himself."

Rankin added: "He's still a young kid but we're looking forward to working with him. He has good ability, but he's also got that commitment and competitiveness that you need to impose yourself on opponents.

"He has bags of potential, he's always had potential. Reagan took a pathway to go down south but he was always one who was ear-marked for having huge potential.

"As soon as the name came to me I knew who it was, and it's one we will look to progress."

Thomson told the club's website: "I am buzzing to be back home and signing for this great club.

"Everyone in Scotland knows what this club can do for young players, and that's why I am here.

"I know the gaffer believes strongly in developing players with his background and after speaking with him I knew this was the right place for me."
