Ex-Newcastle goalkeeper coach Andy Woodman under consideration for Gillingham job

Former Newcastle United goalkeeper coach Andy Woodman is a candidate for the Gillingham job in League One.

The Kent side are in a bitter scrap against relegation and could turn to the Bromley boss to carry off what would be a great escape.

Woodman has guided Bromley to promotion contenders in the National League.

He left a comfortable job at Arsenal as coach to take up the reins at Bromley in his first job as a number one, and despite fielding a team of young players and teenagers, with a limited budget, Woodman reached the play-offs only to lose narrowly to the team that eventually won them in Hartlepool.

Woodman was linked strongly with jobs at Hartlepool and Scunthorpe earlier this season.

Gillingham parted company with Steve Evans this week after a 4-0 loss to Ipswich.

A Gills statement read: "Gillingham Football Club can confirm that the contract of manager Steve Evans has been terminated by mutual consent with immediate effect.

"The club wishes to thank Steve for all his efforts over the past two years in circumstances that have been significantly more difficult and challenging due to the Covid pandemic, and wishes him well in the future.

"The search for a new head coach/manager will begin immediately.

"There will be no further comment from the club on this matter."
