Ex-New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie joins ABC News as political contributor

NEW YORK _ Chris Christie is trading a beach chair for a seat in a news studio.

The former New Jersey governor has scored a gig as an ABC News political contributor, a source familiar with the matter told the Daily News on Monday night.

Christie will be thrown right into the thick of it, with an appearance on "Good Morning America" at 7 a.m. ET Tuesday. The 55-year-old politician will then take a break and return on air in the evening to comment on President Donald Trump's first State of the Union address, the source said.

Christie's new assignment, first reported by NJ.com, comes less than two weeks after he concluded eight years as governor of the Garden State. He was hired by ABC because of his connections to Trump and other White House officials, the source said.

Before landing at ABC, Christie tried getting a job at local sports radio station WFAN, but was taken out of the running because sources said he was no match to predecessor Mike Francesca.

The end of Christie's governorship was marred by historically low approval ratings and a string of controversies, including his being spotted lounging on a public beach that had been closed because of a contentious government shutdown he forced.
