Ex-Motherwell hero blasts 'lack of desire' as Dundee thump Steelmen

Furious former Motherwell star James McFadden last night tore a strip off his old side following their 3-0 Premiership defeat against Dundee at Dens Park.

Following back-to-back 2-0 wins over Aberdeen and Hearts, Motherwell came unstuck on Tayside as Luke McCowan and Danny Mullen gave Dee a comfortable lead going into the interval, with Ryan Sweeney adding a killer third four minutes into the second half.

McFadden starred for Motherwell from 2003 to 2003 and again in 2013-14, following spells at Everton, Birmingham City and Sunderland.

But he was far from happy with Graham Alexander's side and, speaking on BBC Scotland's Sportscene show, he said: "You have to go and take control of the situation. Dundee thoroughly deserved their win, there's no doubt about that, but they were helped by Motherwell's lack of desire to go and defend, to close down.

"They were in good positions to go and do that, they just couldn't do enough to stop Dundee from going in front and extending their lead and I have to say that Dundee deserved their victory.

"They were able to stop it, they just didn't.

"You can say you've got bodies there and that sometimes gives you a false sense of security. It's OK, you've got plenty of bodies round, but nobody goes and takes responsibility, nobody wants to go and put pressure on the ball.

"You have to go and take control. They didn't do that, the manager is clearly unhappy, and the players have to accept that.

"There's no hiding place for them."
