Ex-Motherwell and Accies defender just happy to be playing, as he joins Clyde

Jonathan Page has set his sights on a League One title tilt with Clyde – and admits he’s happy just to be playing at all.

Two years of disruption caused by the Covid pandemic and a relegation to the Highland League with Brechin City last season could have had bigger consequences for the 31-year-old Englishman.

And while former Motherwell, Hamilton and Airdrie defender Page hasn’t enjoyed much of a break from last term before the NL Cup kicks off at Broadwood this weekend, he’s just eager to get stuck in.

Page said: “I didn’t see a whole lot of Clyde last season, but I look at the quality of players they’ve got and some of the quality of players that they’ve added, so I see no reason why they shouldn’t be competing at the right end of the table.

“I’m sure you could have that conversation with a player from every one of the 10 teams, and I expect they will probably give you a similar answer.

“But when you have players of the quality that Clyde do they should certainly be aiming to win as many games as possible.

“It’s a really good club and they’re playing at a higher level [than Brechin were] so I’m very pleased with the move – it was something that I was looking to do, to try and test myself.

“Looking at all the teams that are in there, it should be a very high quality, competitive league this season.”

Page was one of four new arrivals at Broadwood over the past week, with ex-Celtic youth Kieran McGrath, defender Billy Mortimer and striker Robert Jones also joining.

It was a difficult season for Page, and he admits there wasn’t much of a summer, but he’s just getting on with it.

He said: “It really wasn’t the best season at Brechin, I was really disappointed.

“Nobody wants to be relegated, and it’s the first time I’ve had to go through that, so it was massively disappointing – more so for the fans and people associated with Brechin.

“Hopefully they can bounce back. They’ve recruited well, they’ve got a good manager, so my hope is that they can come straight back up.

“I think it was the best part of two weeks between the end of the season and starting in again at Clyde, so there wasn’t much time for a break.

“But given the disruption the last two years have caused in football, I think I’m just pleased to be back and hopefully going to be playing or at least be involved in football on a regular basis, without the lengthy disruptions and breaks and stuff.”
