Ex-Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan calls for Champions League final to be moved from Russia 'in solidarity with Ukraine'

A former Minister for Justice and Minister for Foreign Affairs has called for the Champions League final to be moved - in a show of 'solidarity' with the people of Ukraine.

Charlie Flanagan made the call on social media this morning, claiming that the removal of the UEFA showpiece event from Saint Petersburg in Russia would be a gesture of support for those in Ukraine.

A UEFA statement this morning read: "UEFA is constantly and closely monitoring the situation. At present, there are no plans to change the venue."

Responding, Charlie Flanagan tweeted: "European Champions League final should be switched from St. Petersburg as a gesture of solidarity with the people of Ukraine. "

Taoiseach Micheal Martin has said that Ireland will stand in solidarity with Ukraine.

It comes after Russian president Vladimir Putin announced on Monday that he would recognise the two breakaway regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.

The current Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said Ireland’s support for Ukraine was “unwavering” and added that Dublin would support additional EU sanctions on Russia in response to the move.

The Kremlin is 'monitoring' the situation in the Donbass region, saying that the main aim is to save lives and 'ensure the safety of the population'.

A Kremlin spokesperson also told Sky News that they have no information on whether Russian forces have already entered Donbas.

But they said Russia is still open to diplomacy and has an interest in this.
