Ex-Melbourne Bar Manager Weighs In On Night Ruby Rose Alleges She Was Assaulted By Katy Perry

CONTENT WARNING: This article discusses alleged sexual assault.

The former manager of the bar where Ruby Rose claimed Katy Perry sexually assaulted her in 2010 has weighed in following the actress’ allegations.

Rose claimed in a series of Threads posts earlier this week that Perry assaulted her during a night out at Spice Market in Melbourne, alleging “Katy Perry sexual [sic] assaulted me at spice market nightclub in Melbourne. Who gives a s*** what she thinks.” The allegations are firmly denied by Perry.

Speaking to the Herald Sun about the alleged incident, Spice Market’s former manager  — whose name was not revealed — claimed he remembered Rose and Perry visiting the venue along with Perry’s “make-up girl and another guy who was friends with Ruby”.

He claimed the situation was a “security nightmare” given the pair’s celebrity status, adding that there were “600 people” at the venue and that Perry “kept coming out and dancing with everybody and going right in the middle of the mosh pit”.

The former boss of the venue further alleged Perry and Rose “were drunk” on the night and that they’d “both had way too much to drink”.

“They were drunk, they weren’t paralytic or anything and just like any other person drinking at a nightclub. Being conscious of them both being public figures, we didn’t want someone taking photos of them drunk like that. We always protected them as much as we could,” he alleged.

The ex-manager said he remembered a security guard escorting the pair from the venue’s rear exit. He also claimed that Perry and Rose were in a cordoned-off area of Spice Market, and that he believed they were heading to a nearby hotel after the bar.

He said he was not aware of any alleged assault on the night of Perry and Rose’s appearance.

It comes one day after Victoria Police confirmed they were investigating Rose’s claims, saying detectives from the Melbourne Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) were probing a historical sexual assault in the city in 2010.

In a follow-up post, Rose said she had “finalised all of my reports” with police and would not be commenting further while the investigation continues.

“It’s going to look like I am ignoring everything from supportive messages, to other people’s experiences, but I’m not,” Rose wrote. “This is a standard request from the police and in many ways, quite the relief. I can start the healing process now.”

In her original post levelling the allegations, Rose claimed she had reframed the alleged incident as a “funny little drunk story” because Perry later helped her obtain a US visa, “so [she] kept it a secret”.

Perry has strongly denied the allegations. On Tuesday, a representative for the singer said: “The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, they are dangerous, reckless lies”.

“Ms. Rose has a well-documented history of making serious public allegations on social media against various individuals, claims that have repeatedly been denied by those named,” the statement read.

No charges have been laid in the investigation.
