Ex-Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo handed five-match ban and $25,000 fine after tunnel brawl

Former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo has been handed a five-match ban and issued with a $25,000 fine after his involvement in a tunnel brawl following Boca Juniors' controversial exit from the Copa Libertadores back in July.

Rojo, 31, grabbed a fire extinguisher off the wall amid a furious post-match clash as Boca stars clashed with opposition players after their defeat by Atletico Mineiro.

The last-16 tie at the Mineirao stadium ended goalless before Atletico went through 3-1 on penalties. However, Boca believed they had a legitimate goal ruled out for the second time in the tie, having also had a goal disallowed for offside after a long VAR check in the goalless first-leg.

Clips circulated on social media which appeared to show law enforcement officers spray furious Boca players at the door of their dressing room after the match, with further videos showing the players choking as they continued to protest their elimination.

Brazilian website Globoesporte claimed Boca players were trying to get into the home dressing room, where the match officials had sought refuge, after being enraged by a controversial VAR decision in the match.

Rojo was captured tearing a fire extinguisher from the wall and lifting it above his head before he was calmed down and urged to drop it by a coach.

After a lengthy investigation CONMEBOL have decided on punishment for every individual involved with former United defender Rojo handed a five-match ban and a hefty fine.

"SUSPEND the Player MARCOS ROJO for 5 (five) matches," a statement read. "This sanction is must comply with the provisions of Articles 73 and following of the Disciplinary Code of CONMEBOL.

"Likewise, the Player MARCOS ROJO is imposed a fine of USD 25,000 (TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND US DOLLARS). The amount of this fine will be automatically debited from the amount to be received by CLUB ATLÉTICO BOCA JUNIORS, in respect of Television or Sponsorship rights."
