Ex-Man Utd star Daley Blind collapses in frightening heart scare in Ajax friendly

Former Manchester United full-back Daley Blind has suffered another heart scare after collapsing during a friendly for Ajax.

The 30-year-old was diagnosed with a heart condition in December after complaining of dizziness midway through a Champions League fixture.

Blind was cleared to continue playing football after having a subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD system) fitted.

But his latest scare will be a concern to both Blind and Ajax chiefs after he received medical attention on the field in Tuesday's match against Hertha Berlin.

It was during the second half when Blind collapsed to the turf inside Ajax's penalty box as teammates called to the bench for help.

At one stage Blind pointed to his chest as medical staff assessed his condition.

He remained conscious throughout and was able to converse before walking off the pitch himself after Ajax made a substitution in the 79th minute.

Speaking after the match Ajax boss Erik ten Haag said: "Daley Blind’s ICD went off. He got subbed off straight away and he is feeling okay now, he is feeling fine. We will do research about this now."

Blind was fitted with the ICD to help regulate his heart rate following a similar incident against Valencia at the end of last year, after which he was diagnosed with heart muscle inflammation.

The device sends electric pulses to the heart when it detects any abnormal rhythms, particularly those that can cause cardiac arrest.

Ajax know all too well the dangers of heart-related issues on the pitch having dealt with a tragic experience a few years ago.

In 2017, 20-year-old midfielder Abdelhak Nouri collapsed on the pitch during a pre-season friendly after suffering cardiac arrhythmia.

The incident left Nouri with severe and permanent brain damage after spending almost three years in a coma, thus ending his football career.
