Ex-Man United star explains Arsenal transfer snub as Alexandre Lacazette statement released

Here is the Arsenal morning digest for Monday, May 18

Nani snubbed Gunners move for United

Portuguese winger Nani rejected the chance to join Arsenal when he left Sporting Lisbon for Manchester United in 2007.

According to the Daily Star, the Gunners, along with the likes of Real Madrid and Chelsea, were interested in signing him.

But due to United’s Portuguese contingent of Cristiano Ronaldo and assistant manager Carlos Quieroz, he decided to move to Old Trafford.

Nani said: "My agent asked me as there were so many teams to choose from – Chelsea, Arsenal, teams in Italy like Juventus and Inter [Milan].

"I chose Manchester because of the reasons they have me at the time and everything [about how] the past was involved with me.

"It gave me the reasons to go there, all my story and beyond that, told me to go to Manchester."

Nani, 33, currently plays for MLS side Orlando City.

Arsenal release Lacazette statement

Arsenal have released a statement after a video of striker Alexandre Lacazette inhaling balloons emerged in the Daily Star .

"This is a private matter which we are taking seriously. It will be handled internally,” a club spokesman said.

In the latest footage, the Daily Star reported that the striker sent texts that he was “at home, chilling and doing balloons”.

The French forward was issued a warning 18 months ago for using nitrous oxide.

It is not the first time that the French forward has been in trouble during the lockdown.

Last month, he was deemed to have broken government rules after he was spotted talking to a car valeter on his driveway.

French defender may be Arsenal bound

Arsenal have received a boost in their reported pursuit of French defender Axel Disasi – after Stade de Reims president Jean-Pierre Caillot admitted his player could move to north London.

He told the ABCdeSevilla website: "At the time, and if there is nothing new, the player is closer to the Premier League. Can it be Arsenal? Can be.

"But I am not saying more about it because it is confidential.”

But Caillot also warned that Arsenal were not the only club after centre-back Disasi, with Spanish side Sevilla taking a particular interest.

He added: "I’m not surprised by Sevilla’s interest.

"We know that they have been watching it all year round."
