Ex-Man United player reveals Marcelo Bielsa outburst in Leeds United documentary deleted scene

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa is renowned for his maverick tendencies.

During the team's Championship fixture with Aston Villa back in 2019, after Leeds had scored a goal while a Villa player was down injured, Bielsa insisted on levelling the scores in the interests of fair play.

In scenes which are now synonymous with that campaign, Bielsa yelled "Give a goal!" ordering his players to allow Villa to walk the ball into the Leeds net.

For his actions, Bielsa and the team were awarded the 2019 FIFA Fair Play award at a ceremony in September of that year, and it remains an area which many fans feel a source of pride - even if the initial reaction was one of disbelief at the Argentine's instructions.

Former Manchester United and Athletic Club player Ander Herrera has told a similar tale, in a deleted scene from Leeds United's Amazon documentary 'Take Us Home'.

Discussing the maverick Bielsa, Herrera says, "I remember we had a pre-qualification game for [the] Europa League," as seen on The City Talking Studio's YouTube account.

"I remember we play in Turkey against Trabzonspor, we drew 0-0 and we had to go to Turkey the next week to play.

"When you go to Turkey you know how hard it's going to be, the atmosphere is very hard, sometimes the pitches are not great - so we were going to face a very difficult game away.

"And I remember the day before we were training in the stadium and one of the club members came to tell us we were already qualified because Fenerbahce got banned from the Champions League so that meant Trabzonspor were going [to] the Champions League directly and we didn't have to play that game - so we were all celebrating," Herrera reveals.

Fenerbahce were removed from the 2011/12 Champions League Group Stage under suspicion of match-fixing, which allowed Bielsa's Athletic Club to qualify for the Europa League with a bye.

"We were all happy, we were all shouting, hugging each other and he [Bielsa] came so angry to the dressing room.

"And he told us 'how can you celebrate to get qualification for Europa League without playing - I don't like to win like that, I don't like to get access to the Europa League like that.

"He told us he doesn't like to get any victory without playing or deserving that win, so it's one of the things I will keep in my mind forever," Herrera continued.

Bielsa's Athletic side subsequently made it to the final of the Europa League that season, ultimately falling to Atletico Madrid at the final hurdle.

But, for a club whose transfer policy is limited exclusively to signing players with Basque heritage or promoting youth players from within, it represented a monumental achievement.
