Ex-Love Island star Marcel Somerville blasts 'racism' in first coupling

Former Love Island star Marcel Somerville has hit out at the first coupling, during which the three black and mixed race contestants were picked last.

The 33-year-old, who appeared on the 2017 series, took to Twitter and branded it "mad" and said that he was having "flashbacks".

No female Islander stood forward for Marcel when he first entered the villa two years ago and he clearly felt uncomfortable when the same happened for Sherif Lanre.

Firefighter Michael Griffiths was also left on the 'subs bench' and was paired with Yewande Biala, who was also not picked.

Marcel tweeted: "This is mad!!!! #LoveIsland flash backs! Black guy, black girl and mixed race guy all left unpicked. Mad!!!"

None of the girls stepped forward for Sherif (ITV)

His followers agreed, with one tweeting: "It’s so awkward!"

While another commented: "Eurocentric standards of beauty seem to still play a role :(."

A third remarked: "It will happen next year too."

No one stepped forward for Marcel either (ITV)

Another wrote: "Show just ain’t for us."

"Bro lmao you need to go back and educate some of them in there," a fan suggested.

Another wrote: "They’re all stunning as well don’t understand what’s wrong with people."

*Love Island airs tomorrow at 9pm on ITV2
